tbh, i purchased bcuz it was part of a loosely recommended book (may not exact b this, i forget) by yuta aoki of "japanese with yuta" (shameless advertising for GREAT realistic application). so what can i lose? it is helpful and a must esp if you are going at it on your own with a little online help. it is daunting on its own but with explanations that are comprehensible that are all the more helpful from someone that knows the language-more shameless adverts here, folks. i do recommend it as a building block to learn japanese.
Helped me to retain very useful most used vocabularies
Still going through it; however, I find it easier to read and understand than the traditional textbooks. I would recommend it as a supplement to any structured instruction.
The author clearly and concisely explains many of the words that english speaking students commonly struggle with. Thanks to this book, I now better understand words that I thought I already knew, as well as, how they differ from their English counterparts.
Excellent and informative.
This book offers amazing cultural insight into the correct usage of words and how to distinguish between synonyms. I would definitely recommend it to someone who has attained an intermediate level of Japanese knowledge. I say this because a lot of the entries are unfamiliar to me even after 3 years of Japanese study. Also, there are many mistakes in spelling. In all entries, there is an english translation, romajii, and full kanji expression. Sometimes the romaji doesn't match the japanese and vice-versa. Fortunately, if you have a solid foundation in basic/intermediate Japanese these mistakes are easy to catch and correct through the use of a decent Japanese dictionary. Overall, I would strongly recommend using this book for the cultural insight.
I really wanted to like this book. It's right about what an intermediate student needs: a source of information for words with widely different usage in English than in Japanese. How many J-E dictionaries would show you the real difference between "go back" and "kaeru"? Or the difference in usage between "hai" and "yes"?The truth is, it has an awful lot of mistakes. Many times the text in Japanese is plain wrong or it has the meanings swapped. An advanced student should be able to recognize them, but is this book really aimed at advanced students? The answer is a clear no.Professor Miura should have had his texts checked by a bilingual proofreader, but I squarely blame Tuttle here. They should've assigned him a decent editor, capable of detecting these errors.I can't give a book that confuses its students more than 2 stars. It should've deserved more though.
This is a book for early intermediate learners of Japanese. It contains 500 entries of words that English speakers often have trouble with. Some of the included words are a bit odd. For instance I don't think many people would find the word for leg/foot very difficult. Anyway, that author claims that the inclusions are based on decades of teaching Japanese to Americans. The title of the book "Essential Japanese Vocabulary" is somewhat misleading, because the book deals with difficult vocabulary. The layout of the book is clear but the explanations can sometimes be a bit wordy.Note that the book is originally published in 1983. The original publication year should have been mentioned by amazon and the publisher. And the book claims that the author has decades of experience teaching Japanese. Does that mean that he had that experience in 1983 when the book was written???I give the book 2.5 stars only because it is not essential, but it will be helpful.
